Confirming:
Getting the same error (many times) in the konsole window when upgrading a
remote system from Jaunty (9.04) to Karmic (9.10)
'lsof -p <pid>' on the <pid> of the offending process, revealed this
process is 'ccardd'.
sudo killall ccardd
made the noise go away.
