Thank you for the suggestion Bartosz. If I understood you correctly, since I do not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I can use gedit to create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that contains one line and only one line: "HorizSync 30.0-100.0" (without the " marks)
