I don't know specifically what the ubuntu policy is regarding backports of fixes like this, but I'd start here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/python/python This is the actual package page, you might have luck either reporting this to their bug tracker, or contacting the team members directly. It would really be great to have this done upstream; all my machines use ubuntu and this stupid backspacing is driving me crazy...
