I have exactly the same problem (feisty AMD64). Today I tried to use an static IP, but it didn't work and the network must be reconfigured again with DHCP. However, now the network manager icon show a small warning sign, and the menu only shows the wireless networks (but I'm not connected via wi-fi but through my ethernet network).
