Generic trick that sometimes helps: start alsamixer and go to the recording
mixers. There choose the microphone and either 'q'/'z'('y' on German keyboards)
or 'e'/'c' to modify the left or right channel only. Some hw seems to provide
inverse data on left and right, so having them on the same level completely
cancels out the signal.
