Hmm. It -IS- a Postscript printer. Also, I'm almost certain that this printer worked using foomatic/Postscript on an older linux system, probably running fc6, although it might have been connected via parallel port or a network print server (lpd port interface) instead of USB, I don't remember. So the problem might be related to using the USB interface now...
Note: The printer supports BOTH Postscript and pcl. The specs are at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00063880&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN#A2 As I said in the original report, I'm using hpjis pcl3 as a fall-back, but I would prefer to use the Postscript interface. ________________________________ From: Till Kamppeter <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, February 2, 2010 7:38:36 AM Subject: [Bug 498399] Re: foomatic/Postscript does not seem to work (withHP3030 LaserJet on USB) It seems that your printer is not a PostScript printer but during setup it was considered to be one (a PostScript add-on is available for your printer). Please use the "hpijs-pcl3" driver or you can also try the "Generic PCL-6/XL printer" with the "pxlmono" driver. ** Package changed: cups (Ubuntu) => hplip (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: hplip (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: hplip (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed ** Also affects: hplip Importance: Undecided Status: New -- foomatic/Postscript does not seem to work (withHP3030 LaserJet on USB) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/498399 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in HP Linux Imaging and Printing: New Status in “hplip” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: cups The foomatic/Postscript driver seems completely broken, at least when used with a USB-connected HP 3030 LaserJet. Printing plain text sends something to the printer which makes it hang forever trying to print the page. Printing a postscript file causes asciified postscript to appear (i.e. literal %!PS-Adobe... appears on the printed page). Eactly the same tests work fine when directed to another printer definition (for the same printer) using the hpjis pcl3 driver. I will attach printers.conf, and /etc/cups/error_log for each of several tests. Before each test, the error_log file was cleared by doing cupsctl LogLevel=warn; sudo rm /var/log/cups/error_log; sudo cupsctl LogLevel=debug The two printer definitions used in the tests (both using the same physical printer) are hp-LaserJet-3030 - uses the hpijs pcl3, 3.9.8 driver HP_LaserJet_3030FooPS - uses the foomatic/Postscript driver THE TESTS: echo foo | lpr -P hp-LaserJet-3030 # worked ok, log file "error_log_PLAINTEXT_hpijs_pcl3" lpr -P hp-LaserJet-3030 test.ps # worked ok, log file "error_log_POSTSCRIPT_hpijs_pcl3" echo foo | lpr -P HP_LaserJet_3030FooPS # printer hung with light blinking forever, log file "error_log_PLAINTEXT_foomatic_Postscript" lpr -P HP_LaserJet_3030FooPS # printed literal postscript code, log file "error_log_POSTSCRIPT_foomatic_postscript" I'll attach all the above-mentioned files, and the small test.ps postscript file (created with groff -Tps). I'm pretty sure all this worked in some previous Ubuntu release...
