Thomas, I'm seeing the same symptoms with a similar hardware setup. Can you boot the feisty herd 4/5 livecd with removing 'quiet' and 'splash' options please? When you get the prompt, can you press Shift+PageUp a few times and see if you see 'modprobe' crashing with 'strnlen' above it - when the JMicron controller is being initialised.
You can plug your DVD drive into a IDE->USB converter to boot, allowing you to disable your JMicron controller, to see if this is the source of issues. After you update, I'll either log a new issue if it's different, or update this one if the same.
