I had access to the machine again yesterday and found 11 perl-related
crash files in /var/crash - you can find one of those attached to this
comment. Just for curiosity I created a backtrace against the core in
the crash (the trace was created on another machine though):

Note that I get: warning: core file may not match specified executable
file.

I will try to trace on the original machine when I can access it again.
