After some more investigation, I've found a similar suspend/resume issue
(bug 309535) with another TOSHIBA PORTEGE M750 which seems to work in
8.10, so it may be a regression in the kernel causing the problem.
Did you ever use suspend/resume on Ubuntu 8.10, and if so, did it work?
