There was a linux-firmware update today that seemed like it might be pertinent to this issue. After updating, I switched my menu.list to "0" for the default kernel, which is to say the newest one instead of 2.6.31.14. Then I rebooted - twice. So far so good. I have my doubts about how permanent this resolution is, since it has happened before, only to have the problem come back. I will report back in a week or less, regardless of the outcome.
