The Nvidia installer produces a kernel module only for the kernel you are
running at the time of execution; if you install
linux-headers-2.6.31-19-generic, boot the 2.6.31-19 kernel and run the
nvidia installer, the module should be built and the system become usable;
however, as you said, you con't need it anymore.
My personal advise, although, is to install the nvidia-current package,
which installs the driver from the repositories (avoiding the need of the
manual sh) and adds a hook that builds th module for every installed kernel
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Kernel_Module_Support).
