Hi Jeremy, thanks for coming back after this long time. For me it is no longer an issue, as I changed over to Ubuntu 9.10 quite some time ago. The current kernel uname -a gives "Linux IBM-T42P 2.6.31-20-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 8 09:05:19 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux" is performing without any troubles. Although 9.04 is an LTS this annoying effect should have been investigated and its causes should be rectified and healed accordingly. Nevertheless, at least for me you could keep this bug's status as incomplete just for historic purposes and as a refereces should similar effects reappear.
