With the most recent kernel -- 2.6.32.17 the problem still exists. The system seems too boot regularly, then crashing while initializing X11. One big problem: If you are fast enough, you may log in on the console screen, but after a short while the system will stop working. This is with regular starting the system or in recovery mode! Only difference: in recovery mode the time between the crash and console login shown is longer then regularly booting Ubuntu.
