It's not the mono icons particularly, it's the use of the wifi icon to
represent  "the network". For most people who have a wifi card, wifi
represents "the network".

However, in the case where there is absolutely no wifi card present, it
can't really represent the  network. We don't have a really good mono
icon representation for the network - contributions welcome :-)
