Can you try with the latest daily-live CD (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live)? When you boot from the CD, do not press any keys, and let
the installer finish loading. You should see a greeter screen that
presents you with "Try Ubuntu 10.04" and "Install Ubuntu 10.04" options.
If you are not seeing this screen, but rather a live CD desktop as you
suggest, hit alt-F2 to bring up the run dialog and type `apport-collect
542923`, then press enter. This will attach debugging logs to this bug
report, which should give us an indication of why the installer crashed.

Thanks!
