Hmm, after running following commands:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libpaper1 (and selecting letter)
sudo service cups stop
sudo service cups start

And setting up the printer again in cups web interface we get "letter" as 
DefaultPageSize in the PPD.
So it looks like the exact paper name reported by libpaper is used after all ...
The Adobe PPD specification has a table of registered mediaOption keywords all 
starting with first letter uppercase, so A4 and Letter should be used for 
DefaultPageSize and not a4 and letter!

Please don't report upstream to mike, let's see what the cups package
maintainers have to say about it.
