Ah, I understand this now...

gettext normally arranges for the pot file to updated when you run "make
dist", since it's included in the tarball.  Since we natively package
it, we never run "make dist", so the pot file never gets updated!

So yes, we need a "make -C po update-po" as part of the build process.

Interesting, it occurs that many packages patch the sources and don't
necessarily update the pot files - this seems like something we should
genericise a fix for
