Thanks for checking on this.  I think that the problem is a bad RAM
chip.  Removing one of the two 2GB chips fixed all of the problems and
the system is now very stable.  While I cannot be certain that it's a
hardware problem (it could be a bug in accessing 4GB of memory as
opposed to 2GB) I don't currently have time to do any more checking so
this bug can be closed.  In the future if I buy a new 2GB chip and have
problems again I will file a new report with the information you
requested.  Thanks again!
