I'm afraid I don't know what else to tell you guys. Sound in Linux has always been pretty hit and miss for me as well, but this particular issue I was able to fix pretty easily, both in Karmic and Lucid, using the aforementioned procedure.
Only other advice I can give, is that perhaps you should consider posting your problem in ubuntuforums.org. Hopefully someone more expert than myself will see it and be in a better position to help you.
