Further to the pitivi problem:  The system was indeed impacted.
OpenOffice would not launch.  Once I spotted that, I didn't investigate
further.

I did, though, download the .iso for the main distro CD, and burned it.
I then booted from it, and told it to install from there, using the same
partitions as had been updated (or attempted to update), and preserving
the account information.  That worked perfectly.  All I had to do was
reinstall Samba, and redefine my shares and network printer.  Now
everything seems stable.
