'ere ya go, all .log-files from /var/log/dist-upgrade BTW: After sending the initial message, I clicked on 'system rescue' which resulted in ... nothing. The window froze and at some point I decided to reboot the system. On the next boot, KDE wouldn't load (prompt "Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation." and abort), but I could still work with either console or Gnome. In the end (and after some emotional ups and downs) I found out that it was my nvidia-driver, since the kernel had also been updated and the driver needed a re-compilation.
soooo, right now, everything seems to work fine. I don't notice much difference to karmic, however. Thank you in any case for your efforts!
