Thank you for the analysis. I don't really understand why the update-manager 
would panic and want to undo the installation, being basically finished, if 
it's a minor problem.
Another (really unimportant) oddity after my upgrade is that the kubuntu 
boot-screen (prior to login) looks rather EGA-like, might be a persistent 
graphics problem.
Even though the nvidia-issue is off-topic here, I wanted to mention that I 
always recompiled my driver after upgrading the kernel, eventually I found a 
script on the net so that kubuntu would to it automatically during shut-down - 
apparently it didn't work this time and it this possibility didn't cross my 
mind at once.
