Solving the problem by using Google DNS gave me the idea of just adding the address of api.facebook.com to /etc/hosts and voilà: it works! So I guess the problem is a kind of too short DNS query timeout in network.py or curl (because it threw "name lookup timed out" in network.py) since resolving and connecting to api.facebook.com works through my router's DNS, but maybe just not fast enough.
