OK, I did a few thing that eventually made the problem go away, based on
the information in the referenced bug:

1. Purge the image:
dam...@damien-desktop:/boot$ sudo rm *-2.6.31-19-generic

2. Purge the libs
dam...@damien-desktop:/lib/modules$ sudo rm -rf 2.6.31-19-generic

3. Purge the dpkg cache
dam...@damien-desktop:/var$ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-*2.6.31-19-generic*

After which point, it seemed to make the problem go away.
