Incidentally, I just did a clean install of Mint "Helena" (Karmic 9.04)
x64. I uninstalled PulseAudio. Rhythmbox as well as ZynAddSubFX both
worked. I rebooted they still worked. Next time I rebooted they're dead.
Not done anything else.

That was as before. Very occasionally everything worked. Then it
wouldn't.

Dunno of it helps.
