With GParted 0.5.1 an higher, an exclamation mark beside "unallocated"
indicates that there is some problem with the partition or partition
table.  By double clicking on the partition with exclamation mark, a
message is displayed indicating the warning message as it comes from the
parted program.

The attached screen shot demonstrates how this looks, and was created
using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.
