Addition to earlier comment from me (D505 installation with i386 desktop installer):
And with the alternate installer the installation works fine BUT: after reboot, the X server doesn't work apparently => blank screen, no reaction on key combinations like listed in my previous comment. After booting the machine with the Ubuntu 9.10 live CD, I find the /var/lib/Xorg.0.log empty :-( With Ubuntu 9.10 live CD, however, everything is fine!
