Same thing happened to me; I upgraded my D505 running 9.10 (perfectly) to 10.04 on reboot the laptop hung on a black screen once the splash screen had displayed. I downloaded the ISO of the 10.04 and it does the same thing whether trying to install or just run the live CD.
