Uh oh. This is kind of embarrasing.
Earlier this month I upgraded the firmware on my sansa clip+. That must 
obviously have changed some settings on the sansa that I kind of forgot about.
I found the settings for the usb protocol on the sansa. They have to be set to 
MSC. It does NOT work with neither "automatic recognition" nor "MTP".

So rey_han, sorry for messing up your bugrepport with a lot of nonsense.
(also I mistook your sandisk cruzer for a sandisk mp3-player - like my
sansa clip).

I will say, however, that the one thing I commented earlier with the
acpi=off in the bootline did solve some usb mounting problems I had
earlier.
