If you have already tried this or know more than I expect, then please accept my apologies. I write these assuming everybody is a new user. If you run (in a terminal) 'alsamixer' (press alt-f2, type alsamixer into the box and tick Run in Terminal) (see Screenshot, left image) and turn up / unmute (in alsamixer you press 'M' to unmute/mute) the 'Subwoofer' volume output (see Screenshot, right image) and see if that helps at all.
If this doesn't help, then report back and I'll see what I can do... as I too own a MacBookPro 5,5 and the sound is fine for me (albeit the internal microphone's volume is really low!) ** Attachment added: "Screenshot 1 is the left image and screenshot 2 is the right image.
