Partial solution found. I removed and re-installed the alsa sound system. I then went to http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/modemident.php to get drivers installed. I did not find an exact match; but I found a generic one to try. I now have the sound card recognized and speakers; but still no sound. All the mute settings that I know of are off. The CD, music players appear to work (play); but still no sound yet.
