This bug can be closed. As i mentioned above updating to a latest release fixed the issue. After that I encountered another issue for which i filed the following bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/542512 This issue again deals with sound. I waited for a while and then i did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04.
