Checking with different kernels:

Installed 10.04 in a VMWare session. No additional packages installed,
just a plain English install in a VMWare Server session.

1. Bare install: Kernel "2.6.32-21-generic". Problem still exists
2. Updated to kernel provided by "Update Manager": Kernel "2.6.32-22-generic". 
Problem still happens.
3. Updated to latest kernel. Kernel "2.6.34-999-generic". Problem still happens.

Latest kernel was obtained here: 
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/ at Tue May 25
