+ "do you recognize something like a "gart setting failure" at startup?"
+ No, but I do not know where to look for this at startup. Which log file would
I find this in?!

search at /var/log/kern.log
for example at my log file, the line had looked like
"kernel: [ 9.020414] [drm:rs400_gart_adjust_size] *ERROR* Forcing to 32M
GART size (because of ASIC bug ?)"

+ "try to boot with 'nomodeset' kernel option"
+ Can you please provide step-by-step instructions on how to do this with the
new GRUB for Ubuntu 10.04?

of course:
1. open terminal
2. type:
sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
3. search for a line #defoptions=
4. add
nomodeset
5. save and close
6. type:
sudo update-grub
7. reboot
