So if gparted can't find kpartx then it won't list the dmraid devices? That sounds like it solves the mystery then. FYI, upstream dmraid and lvm/libdevmapper have moved to always inserting the 'p' before the partition number. Ubuntu has patches to maintain the old behavior currently that will likely be dropped in maverick.
