So if gparted can't find kpartx then it won't list the dmraid devices? 
That sounds like it solves the mystery then.  FYI, upstream dmraid and 
lvm/libdevmapper have moved to always inserting the 'p' before the 
partition number.  Ubuntu has patches to maintain the old behavior 
currently that will likely be dropped in maverick.

Out of curiosity, why does gparted need kpartx?
