I was able to gain some functionality of the drives by installing vlc
and gstreamer packages a well as using synaptic package manager to
reinstall the linux kernel. This is not a fix, but a stop-gap, as the
computer does not automatically recognize a disk in the drive or a usb
drive in the port. However Disk Utility is now showing the drives, and
they can be opened to read in Places - Computer - (drive). If anyone
else is havig this issue this might help until a more permanent fix is
made.
