It seems to be a gradual degradation of the ath9k module (or something related). If I periodically unload and reload the ath9k module (as in previous comment), I'm able to keep the system running normally. A reduction in reported signal strength is a good indication, I think, of pending failure. Once the failure (as above) happens, the only cure is a reboot, however.
