FYI, I managed to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook on an Eee PC S101 without encountering this problem.
Setup: Installer running from a pluggable SD drive (created with the ubuntu startup disk creator) Running the installer in a "live session", ie, after booting Ubuntu proper.
