I was seeing this problem, but was able to beat it simply by using a different USB stick. I had reinstalled on the first stick (PNY 4GB mini-attache) multiple times with UNR, desktop and alternate, but as soon as I switched to the second USB stick (PNY 2GB optima) the alternate cd image (installed with unetbootin) worked perfectly. I did not try any of the others versions.
