Fabrice, The reason why the patch was dropped was that due to some weird circumstances, the user selected editor was not saved, so basically, there were no way of setting mcedit to be a default editor for mc. Right now (a) user selected editor is correctly saved and (b) on the first run the alternative system asks, whether the user wants to use mcedit or any other installed editor on F4, so I don't think there's a reason to keep this delta.
I am not sure how strict is the conformance of Ubuntu to the Debian Policy so you are free to drop the patch if for some reason you think that mcedit should be used by default.
