The problem has come back. I've just tried a sleep-wake cycle with
Amarok NOT running, and I still get the same behaviour.

When I kill PulseAudio I then get a knotify4 process going bananas at
between 30-40% CPU. When I kill that, if Amarok is running, that goes
bananas as well in the same way and has to be killed.
