Yes, the entries are listed in /usr/share/applications, but don't appear in the main menu. I'm not sure if they ever did run /usr/share/gnome- menus/update-gnome-menus-cache in Karmic, but its working there without any problems.
I copied the missing entries to ~/.local/share/applications and they immediately appeared in the main menu.
