Well, network-manager updated yesterday, and things changed. Now my ethernet works, but the wireless no longer turns on if I unplug the ethernet. And I see no icon on my top task bar any more to access the network things. I unhooked the ethernet and rebooted. I am using the B43 driver. The blue light is on. But no wireless. I tried turning the wireless off with the switch. That worked, but it would not restart. Plugging in the Ethernet did NOT turn on eth0.
I can't figure out how to access network-manager. I sent the apport-collect report in. I tried to look at the log files with gedit, and got the following error message, which kep repeating: GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information.
