Sorry about the wrong command, you have to run
  /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin -writer /path/to/your/file
Does it also print nothing if openoffice crashes?

I have the "Web" view here also, as it is set in the file to be the view
on opening - but as I said: No crash, no hang...

In case you can reproduce the crash, could you please generate an
apport crash report for this?
You can enable apport for one instance like this:
sudo service apport start force_start=1

Apport will open a new bug when the crash is generated, please mention
the new reports bug number here.
