I tried the dpkg --purge and cleaned the apt cache but it still does not resolve the problem...
As a reminder, this problem originally occurred when my internet connection went down following a power outage during the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 (i'm on a laptop, so the computer was still working). I had to do a power off/power on to restart the system at that time... If you're interested in any further details, please do ask...
