More detail: from the command line, "akonadictl restart" (as user, not
root) also works to restore lost functionality.

The following Debian bug report seems to have made considerable progress 
(scroll down to the bottom half):

It seems the problem may be in libmysqlclient16. I have not yet tried the 
internal MySQL server.
