The answer is that it did boot correctly at first so presumably it was OK with that kernel on my pc, my duaghters was only upgraded in the first time for months yesterday so I'm not sure about hers. I'm not sure I want to remove "splash" since it has quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux and I've had problems with the fan not switching off.
