I have faced the exact same problem. I use a Soundblaste 5.1 soundcard as well. Playback was alright in alsa 1.0.21( the version that shipped with lucid), though microphone was not working. On updating to alsa 1.0.23 now suddenly the playback sound is choppy as well.
