I also got this error. But NinoScript's workaround works well. Thank you, NinoScript! Here is another tip. The following command can be used to reload the settings, instead of login/logout.
$ setxkbmap -model evdev In my environment, I need to reload the settings everytime when I plug- off/plug-in my USB keyboard.
