No news. I believe my specific issue is at the conversion of the key to the keypresses as stated above. If you're not seeing your key in SHOWKEY then I think you have a different problem.
Using a USB sniffer I saw the right characters were coming into the system from the USB Bluetooth dongle. Using HCIDUMP I could see the characters were successfully passing that point. For me, it was at the actual characters-to-keypress step the issue shows up. I'm a novice and I don't know enough about what part of the system does that to be able to troubleshoot it further.
